LFG-to-Power Generation
Monmouth County Reclamation Center
Tinton Falls, New Jersey
The Monmouth County Reclamation Center (MCRC) is a large open landfill located in Tinton Falls, New Jersey, a bedroom suburb of New York City. Montauk acquired the gas rights at MCRC in 1995 and through a subsidiary, built a 10 MW electric generation plant on site. The power plant contains two 5 MW Solar Taurus 60 generators. In 2006, our Monmouth project was recognized by the New York Tri-State Metro Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) for its success in applying innovative design-build practices by bestowing it with its “Power Project of the Year” award.
In 2006, Montauk entered into an agreement with MCRC that extended our gas rights at this site through 2020. Montauk’s subsidiary is currently engaged in efforts to expand the LFG collection system at MCRC to support future development of the renewable energy from this important regional facility.
Over the next two years Montauk will invest $750k to $1 million in additional LFG collection wells, horizontal collector trenches and header piping. Montauk’s goal is to increase the volume of available LFG from 4,000 scfm to as much as 7,000 scfm. Concurrently, Montauk will initiate the permitting and design of an expansion of its existing power generation plant at MCRC. It is projected that the expansion will accommodate additional generation capacity on the order of 3.5 MW to 5 MW. The capital costs associated with the additional generation equipment is expected to be on the order of $5.5 million to $7.5 million.
